OCI-Life Visa

Under Indian laws, if the holder of an Indian passport acquires nationality of another country, he/she should surrender his/her Indian passport forthwith to the nearest Indian Mission/Post. Unauthorised possession of Indian passport constitutes an offence punishable under the Indian Passports Act, 1967.

Indian Passport-Surrender Form

The Government of India has fixed a fee for renouncing the Indian Citizenship / Surrender Of Indian Passport based on the date, the Person of Indian Origin, has acquired British/Foreign Citizenship. The fee has been fixed w.e.f. 01.06.2010 as under:-

Penalties :

The Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, does not allow dual citizenship.  Holding Indian passport/acquiring Indian passport/travelling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship constitutes an offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967, and attracts penalties.  The Government of India has prescribed imposition of penalty on a graded scale, depending on number of trips made on Indian passport after acquiring foreign nationality, for the violation of Passport Rules and retention of Indian Passport for more than 3 years after acquiring of foreign nationality. The fee structure is as given below:-

(1)Travel each time on Indian Passport after acquiring foreign

citizenship subject to maximum of  Rs.50,000/-  ——(Penalty fee Rs 10,000)

(2) Retention of Indian Passport for more than 3 years 

 after acquiring foreign citizenship   ———————-(Penalty fee Rs  10,000)

(3) Renewal/Reissue(each time)————————–  (Penalty fee Rs 25,000)

(4) Misc. Service obtained  on Indian Passport after

acquisition of foreign citizenship  for each occasion—-(Penalty fee Rs 10,000)


The fee/penalty will be collected at official rate of exchange fixed by the Government of India for each month and rounded off to the next number.

If you wish to apply for OCI Visa and you donot have your old Indian passport to prove that you were an Indian citizen before you acquired British citizenship, then you need to get the following Nativity Certificate from India to prove your Indian origin.

Make sure when you print the following form that  when you have printed Page 1 and 2 of this certificate, then Page 3 of the Nativity Certificate must be printed on the back of Page 2.
